Strong Hybrid Technology: A Practical Solution

Speaking at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tadashi Asazuma, Deputy Managing Director of Sales, Service, and Used Cars at Toyota Kirloskar Motor & Lexus India, highlighted the importance of strong hybrid technology as the most practical starting point for India’s transition to sustainable mobility.

“India is one of the most important markets for us. We aim to provide solutions best suited for Indian consumers and environmental conditions. Currently, strong hybrids offer the most practical answer,” Asazuma stated.

Toyota’s Multi-Pathway Corridor

Vikram Gulati, Executive Vice President and Country Head of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, detailed the company’s multi-pathway strategy, which encompasses a range of technologies:

  1. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
  2. Hydrogen-powered Vehicles
  3. Plug-in Hybrids
  4. Flex Fuel and Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicles

“To address carbon emissions at scale, we need all these technologies because every consumer has different needs,” Gulati said.

Plans for Electric Vehicles in India

When asked about launching fully electric vehicles in India, Gulati reaffirmed that EVs are part of Toyota’s plan but emphasized that they are not the sole solution.

“Globally, EVs have seen a slowdown in some markets, and we need to study Indian consumer preferences before making significant moves,” Gulati added.

Toyota showcased its EV offerings, including the bZ4X and the URBAN BEV concept, at the expo as part of its commitment to carbon neutrality. However, Gulati remained cautious, highlighting that Toyota has possessed EV technology since 1996 and would only introduce such vehicles based on market readiness.

Responding to Market Trends

Toyota is also exploring opportunities in the growing Indian demand for SUVs, MPVs, and larger vehicles.

“Why not? If there’s customer demand, we’re ready to meet it,” Asazuma said, noting the company’s plans to scale production in response to market momentum.

Expansion Plans and Investment in India

To cater to the increasing demand, Toyota recently announced a ₹3,300 crore investment to add a third production line at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka. The new facility will boost annual production capacity by 1 lakh units, bringing the total to 4.4 lakh units by 2026.
